In Mississippi? No Bluesky for You!

Feeds lit up on Friday when Bluesky blocked all users with IP addresses in the US state of Mississippi. The action was in response to the US Supreme Court upholding a lower court ruling to allow Mississippi's Walker Montgomery Protecting Children Online Act to take efect while the law makes its way through the courts.

In a blog post, the company explained that while "keeping children safe online is a core priority for Bluesky," they do not have the resources to implement technical mechanisms to comply with the law or withstand its $10,000 per user penalty for violations.

Readers might recall similar upheaval back in July when Bluesky announced age verification mechanisms to comply with the UK Online Safety Act. We'll provide updates in the future as courts in both countries weigh in on this contentious issue.
